Implementing Confidence Assessment in Low-Stakes, Formative Mathematics Assessments

چکیده
Abstract Confidence assessment (CA) involves students stating alongside each of their answers a confidence rating (e.g. 0 low to 10 high) express how certain they are that answer is correct. Each student’s score calculated as the sum ratings on items answered correctly, minus incorrectly; this scoring system designed incentivize give truthful ratings. Previous research found secondary-school mathematics readily understood negative-marking feature CA instrument used during one lesson, and were generally positive about approach. This paper reports quasi-experimental trial in four lessons ( N = 475 students) across time periods ranging from 3 weeks up academic year, compared business-as-usual controls. A meta-analysis effect sizes schools gave an aggregated Cohen’s d –0.02 [95% CI –0.22, 0.19] overall Bayes Factor B 01 8.48. indicated substantial evidence for null hypothesis there was no difference between attainment gains intervention group control group, relative alternative different. I conclude incorporating into low-stakes classroom formative assessments does not appear be detrimental students’ attainment, suggest reasons why clear outcome obtained.

Introduction: Online formative assessments (OFA’s) have beenincreasingly recognised in medical education as resources thatpromote self-directed learning. Formative assessments are usedto support the self-directed learning of students. Online formativeassessments have been identified to be less time consuming withautomated feedback. This pilot study aimed to determine whetherparticipation and pe...
متن کاملThe Effects of Electronic Formative Assessments on Achievement in Years 7-8 Mathematics
The Mathematics performance of students in the UK is neither stellar nor disastrous. On the 2004 TIMSS, students in England scored significantly lower than those in such countries as Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Belgium, and the Netherlands, but ahead of pupils in countries such as the US, Australia, and New Zealand. These results do not justify complacency. Success in Mathematics is believed t...

Our proposal aims to develop and validate the next generation of on-line, formative assessment tools necessary for middle and high schools to establish the conditions for improving student learning. In today’s high-stakes accountability world, school and district leaders need guidance to design the kinds of school environments that improve student learning. Elmore (2002) explained that instruct...

Social network awareness (SNA) has been used extensively as one of the strategies to increase knowledge sharing and collaboration opportunities. However, most SNA studies either focus on being aware of peer’s knowledge context or on social context. This work proposes online formative assessments with SNA, trying to address the problems of online formative assessment (i.e. lack of individual ass...
